At Dikshya Foundation, we believe that building strong, self-reliant farming communities starts with direct engagement, hands-on learning, and practical support. That’s why, in collaboration with the World Wide Goat Project Nepal (WWGPN), we regularly organize farm visits, training programs, and field trips for goat farmers in rural Nepal.
These outreach activities are designed not just to teach but to listen, learn, and grow together with the farmers.
๐ Farm Visits: On-Site Support and Observation
Our journey begins with visits to individual goat farms. Joined by experts and volunteers, we travel to villages to meet the farmers where they work. During each visit, we:
- Observe the health status of goat herds
- Check the cleanliness and condition of the goat sheds
- Discuss daily water availability and feeding practices
- Distribute worm medicine and other basic veterinary supplies
We also use these visits to identify areas for improvement, taking notes on issues to address in future training sessions. These regular check-ins help us build trust and stay connected with the real-life challenges farmers face.
โ Hands-On Training: Learning by Doing
After each round of visits, we plan targeted training sessions based on what we’ve seen in the field. These sessions are always interactive and practical, focusing on what farmers truly need to succeed.
Topics include:
- Hoof trimming techniques
- Castration methods
- Use of electrolytes and basic deworming medications
- Goat shed design and maintenance
- Mineral and salt supplementation
- Care of mother goats before and after kidding
We also provide tools and supplies such as hoof trimmers, castration kits, and mineral supplements so that farmers can apply what they’ve learned immediately.
๐งณ Field Trips: Learning from Model Farms
One of the most impactful components of our outreach is exposure visits to model goat farms. We organize field trips to places like the National Goat Research Program (NGRP) in Bandipur, operated under the Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC).
On these trips, farmers get to:
- Observe proper herd management techniques
- Learn how to select and care for healthy goats
- Watch live demonstrations of hoof trimming, castration, and kidding support
- Understand the importance of water, salt, and minerals in goat health
“After visiting Bandipur farm, I realized how crucial clean water, salt, and minerals are for goat health. I’ve started giving my goats access to them every day, and they’re looking much healthier!”
— Kumar Shrestha, Dhading District
Following these trips, we have also distributed salt and mineral supplements along with custom-designed boxes to store them in a clean and accessible way. This small but powerful change has been one of the most visible impacts in recent months.
๐ฟ Growing Together
By combining field visits, hands-on training, and educational trips, our farmer outreach program is helping build stronger, healthier, and more informed farming communities. We believe in learning side by side with farmers, offering practical tools and knowledge that improve lives—not just livestock.
Our goal is simple: empower farmers to raise healthier goats, earn better incomes, and improve their overall well-being.
If you’re interested in partnering with us or supporting our farmer outreach programs, please reach out. Together, we can continue making a lasting difference—one farm at a time.
