Improved Cooking Stove Initiative – Sudharieko Chulo In Dhading

Empowering Rural Families with Smoke-Free, Sustainable Cooking Solutions

Under its ongoing environmental initiatives, Dikshya Foundation, in collaboration with local authorities and partner organizations, has successfully introduced Improved Cooking Stoves (Sudharieko Chulo) in Jyamrung Village, Neelakantha-11, Dhading. This project aims to address health hazards, reduce environmental impact, and offer a sustainable cooking alternative for families in remote areas.

πŸ”₯ Why Sudharieko Chulo?

Traditional open-fire stoves are widely used in Nepal’s rural households. However, they pose serious health and environmental challenges:

  • Excessive firewood consumption
  • Indoor air pollution
  • Respiratory diseases caused by prolonged smoke exposure

To combat these issues, Sudharieko Chulo was introduced as a low-cost, efficient, and cleaner alternative that uses less firewood and produces minimal smoke.

πŸ› οΈ Locally Made, Community-Friendly

These stoves are designed using locally available and affordable materials such as:

  • Bricks
  • Mud
  • Iron rods
  • Recycled materials

Their simple design makes them easy to build and maintain, allowing rural families to adopt them without needing expensive tools or technologies.

πŸ’š Health & Environmental Benefits

The impact of improved stoves is significant:

  • Reduces indoor smoke, improving air quality inside homes
  • Lowers risk of respiratory illnesses, especially for women and children
  • Decreases firewood consumption, supporting forest conservation
  • Saves time and energy, reducing the burden of firewood collection

πŸ‘¨‍πŸ‘©‍πŸ‘§‍πŸ‘¦ Impact on the Community

As of now, 150 families in Jyamrung village have received and installed Sudharieko Chulo. Women have shared positive feedback, highlighting how this small change has brought big improvements in daily life, cooking efficiency, and health.

“I used to cough all day from the smoke. Since switching to the new stove, my kitchen is cleaner, and I feel healthier.”
— Dhan Kumari Dhamala, Jyamrung Village
